Jas Athwal Leader of Redbridge council suspended over ‘serious allegation’ Jas Athwal is running to become a parliamentary candidate in Ilford South for Labour, he was axed from becoming a candidate at 11pm on Friday, this was over allegations that were first made in August. Jasbir Athwal has said he has provided evidence that the “allegations were untrue” He released a statement on his social media regarding the selection process incident.

A spokesperson from the Labour party said: "The Labour Party takes all complaints extremely seriously, which are investigated, any appropriate disciplinary action taken in line with the party's rules and procedures. 

Wes Streeting the Labour MP for Ilford North tweeted “suspension of the local frontrunner just 15 hours before the vote is politically motivated and biased in order to stitch up the selection” Jas Athwal’s case has been referred to the National Constitutional Committee and has been suspended pending that process.

Labour MP Preet Gill tweeted “I have heard the news of @Jas_Athwal suspension, and I am deeply shocked. Jas is a well respected leader and was on course to win the selection in @IlfordSouth”
